Microsoft XBOX

The original Xbox, launched by Microsoft in November 2001, was a powerful new entry into the gaming world that essentially brought the speed and tech of a high-end desktop PC into the living room. It was significantly faster and more powerful than its main rivals, the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, allowing it to display incredibly sharp, high-definition graphics. Its biggest breakthrough was a built-in 8GB computer hard drive. This completely eliminated the need for expensive, easily lost memory cards and allowed users to copy their own music CDs directly onto the console to create custom in-game soundtracks—a massive first for the industry. The system launched alongside the mega-hit Halo: Combat Evolved, which changed first-person shooters forever, and it pioneered online console gaming with the launch of Xbox Live. Despite its massive, heavy size and its notoriously giant original controller, its built-in internet port set the definitive blueprint for the connected future of gaming.

XBOX 360

The Xbox 360, launched in November 2005, led a new generation of gaming by shifting the entire industry toward stunning high-definition graphics and deep online social features. It was the very first console to require that all of its games support widescreen high-definition output. It also introduced the concept of "Achievements"—a standardized system that rewarded players with digital badges and points for completing specific challenges inside their games, which fundamentally changed how people played. The console became the definitive home for blockbuster gaming franchises like Gears of War. Despite early reliability struggles—most notably the infamous "Red Ring of Death" hardware failure that forced Microsoft to spend three billion dollars repairing broken systems—the Xbox 360's polished online service and comfortable wireless controllers made it the king of the North American gaming market for much of a decade.
