Sony Playstation Video Game Systems (1994-Today)

Sony Playstation

Sony released the original Playstation (seen here) in December 1994 in Japan and September 1995 in North America. It was a fifth-generation home console, and faced fierce competition from Nintendo 64 and SEGA Saturn. The console sold for a price of $299, and proved to be popular with it's huge game library. In total, 3061 games were produced for the Playstation, with a total of 967 million units sold between all games! In less than a decade, it became the first video game console to sell over 100 million units, and sold a total of 102 million units by the time it was discontinued in 2006.

Playstation 2

The Sony Playstation 2 was Sony's second video game console and was released in October 2000 in North America. It was a sixth-generation console and primarily competed with the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and XBOX. It was announced in 1999, and provided backwards-compatibility for the original Playstation's DualShock controller. It received mostly postive reviews, and became the best-selling video game console of all time, selling 155 million units by the time it was discontinued in 2013. A total of 4,000 game titles were released for the console, and a total of 1.5 billion copies of all games were sold. In 2004, Sony redesigned the Playstation 2, made it smaller and lighter, and named it the PS2 Slim. Even after the release of the Playstation 3, it stayed popular until it's discontinuation.

Playstation 3

Sony released the Playstation 3 in Norh America on November 17, 2006. It was officially revealed at E3 2005. A total of 81639 systems were sold in the first 24 hours of release in Japan. Released at a price of $499, it was the first console to use Blu-Ray disk technology as its storage medium. It's best-selling game was Grand Theft Auto V. Riots broke out the day the PS3 was released in North America with many robbings, and shootings around stores with people who wanted to get their hands on the console. The console was discontinued in October 2016 in North America after 87.4 million units were sold worldwide.

Playstation Portable 

The Playstation Portable, also known as the PSP, was a handheld system released by Sony in March 2005 in North America. It faced fierce competition from the Nintendo DS system. It sold for a price of $249.99. It had a proprietary game format known as the UMD, which was kind of like a CD encased in plastic (similar to MiniDiscs). It's best-selling game was Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories that sold 7.6 million units by October 2015. It had a ten year lifetime, discontinuing in 2014, after 80-82 million units were sold. The UMD format was discontinued in 2016, after the last Japanese factory that produced them shut down.
