✅ Nintendo R.O.B.

To trick hesitant retail stores into buying the newly minted Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) after the infamous 1983 video game market crash, Nintendo cleverly bundled the console with R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) to rebrand the machine as a sophisticated, futuristic toy. R.O.B. became the spearhead of Nintendo's high-stakes marketing campaign, taking center stage during the console's crucial test-market launch in Manhattan in October 1985. While he physically interacted with the screen using spinning tops and blocks in games like Gyromite and Stack-Up, his slow mechanics meant he was quietly discontinued just a few years later. Despite his brief commercial lifespan, R.O.B. is legendary for successfully sneaking video games back into North American living rooms, eventually earning a celebratory legacy with guest appearances as a playable fighter in modern games like Super Smash Bros.
