✅ Super Nintendo Entertainment System

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, arrived in North America in 1991 as the 16-bit successor to the original NES, featuring a rounded lavender-and-grey aesthetic. Engineered to combat the surging Sega Genesis, the SNES utilized innovative "Mode 7" hardware graphics to simulate a 3D perspective through background rotation and scaling, a technical leap showcased brilliantly in launch titles like F-Zero. Its iconic controller introduced the L and R shoulder buttons, a design evolution that fundamentally changed how players interacted with complex genres like fighting games and RPGs. Backed by a superior color palette and a sophisticated, Sony-designed 8-channel sound chip that delivered orchestral-quality scores for masterpieces like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the SNES won the 16-bit generation with nearly 50 million units sold worldwide.
