California Raisins
The California Raisins, an R&B musical group created by a marketing board in 1986, became one of the most unlikely pop-culture phenomena of the late 20th century. Brought to life by the pioneering "Claymation" techniques of Will Vinton Studios, these dancing raisins—complete with soulful expressions, white gloves, and sleek sneakers—first captured the public’s imagination in a television commercial where they performed a stylized cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." The lead vocals, provided by musician Buddy Miles, gave the characters an authentic Motown sound that resonated so deeply that the fictional band eventually released four studio albums, with their signature single even landing on the Billboard Hot 100. The craze sparked a massive merchandising wave, most notably the millions of Hardee's fast-food figurines that became a staple of 1980s bedrooms, alongside plush toys, lunchboxes, and even a Saturday morning cartoon. Though the fad eventually cooled by the early 90s, the California Raisins remain a masterclass in advertising, proving that even the most humble dried fruit could become a global icon of cool.
