âś… "Brothers in Arms" CD
🥇First Album to Sell 1 Million Copies on Compact DiscÂ
Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms, released in May 1985, was the ultimate "killer app" for the compact disc, becoming the first album in history to sell over a million copies on the format and famously outselling its own vinyl counterpart. As an entirely digital studio recording, it was meticulously engineered to showcase the massive dynamic range and silent backgrounds of early CD players, featuring extended versions of hits like "Money for Nothing" that simply could not fit on a standard vinyl LP side. The original 1985 West German and Japanese pressings are considered the absolute gold standard by music purists, prized for their natural, uncompressed studio sound and massive soundstage. While later reissues artificially boosted the volume and altered the balance, these original 1985 discs remain the definitive digital document of the album's historic, crisp guitar tones.
