TIME Machine of the Year

In a historic departure from its tradition, TIME Magazine dedicated its January 3, 1983, cover to the personal computer, designating it the first-ever "Machine of the Year." The iconic cover featured a life-sized sculpture depicting a white plaster man hunched over a primitive workstation, seemingly mesmerized by the glow of a computer screen. This choice reflected the explosive technology revolution of 1982, a year in which PC sales doubled to nearly 3 million units and the machine moved from the realm of hobbyists into the heart of ordinary homes and offices. The accompanying 21-page feature presciently described the device as a massive modern influence, highlighting its burgeoning role in everything from electronic mail to daily business. Despite the monumental nature of the issue, it remains a famous piece of industry irony that the journalists who hailed the computer’s arrival actually wrote the entire story using manual typewriters, as the newsroom had not yet transitioned to word processors.

There is even an ad in there warning people about the possibility of nuclear war during the Arms Race!
