✅ TRS-80 Pocket Computer
🥇First Commercially-Released BASIC-Based Computer to Fit in a PocketÂ
The Radio Shack TRS-80 Pocket Computer PC-1, launched on July 31, 1980, was a landmark device that condensed the power of a desktop microcomputer into a six-ounce handheld frame. Actually a rebadged Sharp PC-1211, the PC-1 was the first pocket-sized machine in the United States that was fully programmable in the BASIC computer language, offering a 24-character LCD screen. Unlike simple calculators of the era, it featured a tiny but complete QWERTY keyboard and could be docked into a specialized desktop interface to save programs to cassette tape or print hard copies of code on a miniature thermal printer. While it retailed for a steep $249 at launch (roughly $950 today), its ability to perform complex scientific and business simulations anywhere made it an instant favorite for engineers and professionals on the go, bridging the gap between calculators and the modern PDA.
