Nintendo Family Computer

Nintendo released their first cartridge-based gaming system, the Nintendo Family Computer, or commonly known as the Famicom, exclusively in Japan on July 15, 1983. It sold for a price of 14,800 yen at release, and was released with three game options: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Popeye. The Famicom was essentially a test, as Nintendo planned to redesign the Famicom and re-release it in the North American market as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Sales were slow at first as the early revisions featured a bad chip, causing the console to commonly crash. Eventually, though, the console began to sell, and Nintendo began negotiations for the NES release in NA.

Nintendo Famicom Disk System

An add-on for the Famicom, called the Famicom Disk System, was released exclusively in Japan, on February 21, 1986. It used proprietary floppy disk games called “Disk Cards” instead of the standard game cartridges used on the Famicom. It was created in response to consumers wanting to be able to save their progress in games. The Disk System had lifetime sales of 4.4 million by the time it was discontinued in 1990, making it one of the best-selling console add-ons of all time!
