The Apple PowerBook 520, codenamed "BlackBird LC" and introduced in May 1994 for $2,250, was a landmark laptop that permanently redefined notebook design by introducing the world’s very first built-in trackpad. Replacing the clumsy, dust-prone rolling trackballs of earlier portable computers, this smooth, solid-state touch surface allowed users to control the mouse cursor simply by gliding a finger across a small pad—a revolutionary ergonomic leap that quickly became the universal standard for every laptop that followed.
