Arnies Place, Westport CT

Opened in 1981 by Arnold "Arnie" Kaye, Arnie’s Place in Westport, Connecticut, was far more than a standard suburban arcade; it was a high-concept "video palace" that defined the golden age of gaming for the Tri-State area. Housed in a striking, custom-built building with a neon-lit, futuristic aesthetic, the arcade featured over 80 of the latest coin-op titles, ranging from Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to rare imports and deluxe cockpit simulators like Star Wars. Arnie’s was famous for its strict "code of conduct" and impeccably maintained machines, creating a clean, safe environment that contrasted sharply with the "seedy" reputation of inner-city parlors. The venue became a local cultural landmark, hosting competitive tournaments and high-score challenges that drew players from across New England, often featured in gaming magazines of the era. Although the arcade closed its doors in 1994 as the home console market eclipsed the coin-op industry, Arnie’s Place remains a legendary touchstone for 1980s nostalgia, remembered as much for its sophisticated atmosphere and "Arnie’s" branded tokens as for the cutting-edge technology it housed.

Curators Note: This token, seen here, is an original Arnie's Place-branded game token from the golden days of the iconic Westport-based arcade. My father, John Babina III, was a frequent visitor and gamer to Arnie's Place in the late-1980s and early-1990s, and kept this token as a souveiner of the iconic arcade for over 30 years. It is now presented with honor at the Westport Tech & Nostalgia Museum as physical proof of our hometown's legacy in the gaming world.
