✅ Atari 2600 - "Space Invaders"

🥇First Video Game Software to Sell 1 Million Units

The Atari 2600 home port of Space Invaders, released in March 1980, was a historic landmark that effectively saved the struggling console and established the video game industry's very first true "killer app." Programmed by Rick Maurer, it was the first official home console licensing of a major arcade hit, allowing players to bring the quarter-munching phenomenon of Taito's 1978 arcade cabinet straight into their living rooms. While technical limitations meant the home version replaced the arcade’s sleek, vertical screen and backdrop with broader, blockier pixel art, Maurer compensated by packing the cartridge with 112 game variations, offering choices like invisible invaders, moving shields, dual-player modes, and zig-zagging enemy missiles. The release caused Atari 2600 console sales to quadruple, driving over $100 million in revenue for Atari in 1980 alone as millions of families bought the $190 console purely to play this single game. By proving that popular arcade experiences could be successfully commercialized for home hardware, Space Invaders transformed the Atari Video Computer System into a household staple and set the blueprint for how software would drive hardware sales for decades to come.
