✅ Coleco Zaxxon
The Coleco Zaxxon Tabletop, released in 1982, was arguably the most technically ambitious entry in Coleco’s line of mini-arcades, successfully shrinking Sega’s complex spaceship shooter into a battery-powered portable format. Utilizing a high-resolution glowing glass screen, the game recreated the unique "3D" angled perspective of the arcade hit, allowing players to fly their ship left, right, up, and down to climb over electrified fences and dodge homing missiles. The unit featured a vital altitude meter on the side of the screen, forcing players to carefully monitor their height to blast enemy fuel tanks and navigate the narrow openings of space fortresses. Housed in a futuristic, angular grey cabinet with an authentic-sounding built-in speaker, it was widely praised for bringing a level of graphical depth to a portable toy that was completely unprecedented for the early 1980s.
