The Google Glass Explorer Edition XE-C, released in late 2013 for $1,500 as the refined "v2" revision of Google’s futuristic optical head-mounted display, represented the tech giant's boldest push into consumer augmented reality. Designed around a lightweight titanium frame, the 36-gram device sat like a pair of lensless spectacles, projecting a translucent 640x360 pixel display onto a small glass prism hovering just above the wearer's right eye. The XE-C hardware update introduced critical usability improvements over the original v1 launch model, doubling the system memory to 2 GB of RAM, adding support for prescription frames, replacing the bone-conduction transducer with a dedicated mono earpiece for clearer audio, and bundling snap-on active shades. Running on a dual-core OMAP 4430 processor, it allowed users to take 5 MP photos, capture 720p video, check notifications, and get turn-by-turn navigation using "OK Glass" voice commands or swipe gestures on the side-mounted touchpad. Though its steep price tag, short battery life, and public privacy concerns over its subtle front-facing camera ultimately prevented it from reaching mainstream adoption, the XE-C remains the definitive collector's artifact of early-2010s wearable technology.
