The Lightning Adding Machine, first produced in 1908 by the Lightning Adding Machine Co. of Los Angeles, was a popular and affordable "dial adder" that became a staple of American small businesses for over half a century. Unlike the heavy, multi-thousand-dollar comptometers used by major corporations, the Lightning was a portable, wedge-shaped device—originally built on a wooden base and later a Bakelite stand—that functioned using a simple stylus-driven interface. The user would insert a metal stylus into one of the seven perforated wheels, rotating them clockwise to add digits which then appeared in a small result window through an odometer-style carry mechanism. While early models were primarily designed for addition, a 1948 redesign introduced a dedicated clearing lever and a more robust internal gearing system that allowed for easier subtraction through counter-clockwise rotation. Celebrated for its "low-cost" efficiency and durable stamped-metal construction, the Lightning sold over two million units before production ceased in the early 1960s, remaining a beloved example of the era when mechanical precision was accessible to the everyday merchant.
