✅ Lightning Calculator
The Lightning Adding Machine, first produced in 1908, was a popular and affordable desktop calculator that became a staple for small business owners for over half a century. Unlike the heavy, ultra-expensive computing machines used by massive corporations, the Lightning was a lightweight, wedge-shaped gadget that operated using a simple metal pointer, or stylus. To add up numbers, a merchant would insert the pointer into one of seven numbered dials and rotate them clockwise, which mechanically turned internal wheels to reveal the final math answer in a small plastic window. A 1948 redesign added a handy clearing lever and upgraded internal gears that let users easily subtract numbers by spinning the dials counter-clockwise. Sold by the millions before production ended in the early 1960s, it remains a beloved example of the era when mechanical precision was cheap enough for the everyday shopkeeper.
