The Magnavox Magnavision (Model VH-8000), released in December 1978 for $749, made history as the very first commercially available LaserDisc player introduced to home consumers. Co-developed by Philips and MCA DiscoVision, this massive, top-loading unit looked more like a heavy piece of laboratory equipment or an oversized VCR than a modern record player, utilizing a glowing red helium-neon gas laser tube to read analog video and audio encoded on 12-inch shiny optical discs. Launched initially in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside movies like Jaws, the VH-8000 dazzled early adopters by delivering a far sharper picture and random-scene access that outperformed standard VHS tapes. However, because it was built before the technology was fully standardized, the player suffered from notorious reliability problems—such as mechanical alignment issues, disc-skipping, and lens contact—making it a temperamental marvel.
