RIM Blackberry 962

The RIM BlackBerry 962, released in late 1998, was a specialized variant of the iconic Inter@ctive Pager 950 designed to provide a more cost-effective entry point into the burgeoning world of two-way mobile messaging. While it shared the same rugged, palm-sized chassis and mechanical thumbwheel as the 950, the 962 was distinguished by its reduced internal storage—featuring 2MB of flash memory instead of the 4MB found in its more expensive sibling. Operating on the 900 MHz Mobitex network, it allowed mobile professionals to send and receive full emails, faxes, and peer-to-peer messages using a highly tactile QWERTY keyboard that would eventually define the BlackBerry brand. Despite its smaller memory footprint, it remained a powerhouse of efficiency, capable of running for several weeks on a single AA battery and serving as a critical bridge between the era of passive "beepers" and the always-connected smartphone future.
