The Samsung UpRoar (SPH-M100), launched in late 2000 for a steep $400 on the Sprint PCS network, made history as the world’s very first mobile phone to feature a built-in MP3 player. A true forerunner to the modern smartphone, this silver flip-phone packed 32 MB of onboard flash memory—enough to hold roughly 7 to 10 digital audio tracks—and allowed users to load songs directly from a home computer using a supplied cable and software. To manage music on the go, it came bundled with a special wired headset featuring a built-in inline remote control to adjust volume, skip tracks, and automatically pause playback whenever an incoming call rang through. Equipped with a green-backlit monochrome display, voice-activated dialing, and up to 10 hours of continuous music playback, the UpRoar generated massive buzz by showing the world for the first time that a single pocketable device could replace both a cell phone and a portable cassette or CD player.
