Sega Game Gear
The Sega Game Gear, unleashed in North America in 1991, was the ultimate schoolyard flex—a full-color, backlit portable powerhouse that made the original Game Boy’s pea-green screen look ancient. Essentially a mobile version of the Sega Master System, it featured a 3.2-inch display capable of pumping out bright, vivid colors in the palm of your hand. However, this gorgeous screen came with a brutal "energy tax": the machine infamously devoured six AA batteries in a mere three to five hours, turning a wall outlet adapter or a heavy rechargeable battery pack into an absolute survival requirement. While it was noticeably heavier than its rivals and suffered from early LCD screen blur, the Game Gear was a solid success, selling over 10.6 million units and proving that gamers were hungry for true color on the go.
