SONOS ZonePlayer ZP100

🥇First Commercially-Released Wireless Multi-Room Audio System

The Sonos ZonePlayer ZP100, unveiled in January 2005 for $499, was the groundbreaking flagship hardware component that essentially birthed the modern multi-room wireless audio category. Built into a heavy, brushed die-cast aluminum chassis with a built-in 50-watt-per-channel Class-D amplifier, the ZP100 allowed music lovers to wire standard passive speakers directly into its rear binding posts without needing a traditional receiver. Rather than relying on a home's often spotty local Wi-Fi, the unit communicated with other ZonePlayers using SonosNet, a proprietary peer-to-peer wireless mesh network that ensured perfectly synchronized, lag-free audio playback across up to 32 distinct rooms. Paired with the dedicated, full-color CR100 scroll-wheel remote control or desktop controller software, users could stream digital MP3s stored on a computer, tune into internet radio stations, or plug in external sources like a CD player through its auto-detecting RCA inputs. By seamlessly combining amplified high-fidelity sound, independent volume control per room, and mesh networking, the ZP100 set the gold standard for how digital music would be distributed throughout the modern home.
