🥇First Commercially-Released Mobile Phone to Fit in a Pocket
Launched in 1986 for a premium £1,990 (about $2,800), the Technophone Pocketphone was an engineering marvel that revolutionized the mobile industry by being the first cellular phone designed to slide right into a standard shirt pocket. Created by a UK startup, the phone was built from the ground up to challenge the massive, heavy "brick" phones of the era, like the famous Motorola DynaTAC. To achieve its ultra-compact, seven-inch profile, the design team used an advanced, incredibly dense eight-layer circuit board and ultra-thin battery cells co-developed with Sanyo and Panasonic. Operating on early analog networks, this pocket pioneer featured a backlit screen, a 99-number internal memory, and the unique ability to switch between competing phone networks at the touch of a button. While its slim profile meant talk time was limited to just 20 minutes unless you carried a bulky backup battery, its groundbreaking size proved to the world that mobile phones were meant to be carried by people, not permanently bolted into cars.
